This page summarizes the sites that are reviewed in the area of the Sharon and the south coast plains – the western side of the central Israel. The region is bounded between Nahal Tanninim in the north, Yarkon River (Tel-Aviv) in the south, Mediterranean Sea (West), and Samaria hills (East).

Caesarea Maritima (“by the Sea”) is one of the most important cities in the Roman World, and a Crusader fortress along the road from Acre to Jerusalem.
The Aqueduct brought running water to the old city of Caesarea, along a raised aqueduct. The source of the water was the springs of Shummi, 10KM away. Herod build the aqueduct in the 1st C BC. later, in the 2nd C AD it was expanded by the Romans. Later, 2 more aqueducts were built.
This Arab village is identified with the Biblical Gilgal of the Sharon, one of the Kings that were defeated by the Israelites: “the king of the nations of Gilgal” (Joshua 12:23).
According to one of the Traditions, this site is the tomb of Benjamin, one of the 12 tribes of Israel.
One of the most important port cities in ancient history, the port city is strategically located at major crossroads in the center of the land of Israel.
2 Chronicles 2:16: “And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need: and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem”.
Aphek (Afek, Antipatris) in the Sharon
Tell Aphek (Afek, Antipatris) was a gateway on the main trade route from north to south. More than 6,000 years of successive cities have been built on the mound overlooking the springs of the Yarkon river.
Joshua 12: 7, 18: “And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote …the king of Aphek, one…”
Remains of a Crusader and Mamluke period fortress, located on a hill at the side of ancient roads.
Greek-Orthodox Church, Jaffa
A Greek-Orthodox church, located near the southern entrance to Old Jaffa, and is known for its tall bell tower.
St. Peter’s is an old Franciscan Church, located in Old Jaffa.
Acts 9 40: “But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise”.
The traditional site of the house of Simon the Tanner, where St. Peter resided while he was in Jaffa.
Acts 10 6: “He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side”
One of the most ancient maritime harbors in the world; mentioned in many written sources – such as the Old and New testaments and the Greek mythology.
2 Chronicles 2 : “And Solomon… will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa”;

Jisr e-Zarka is an Israeli Arab town located north of Caesarea. A Roman aqueduct passes through the town.
Tel Tanninim (“Crocodiles mound”) is the ruins of the city of Crocodilopolis, located on the mouth of Tanninim stream. Nearby is a fishermen pier and village.
Horvat Zakkur, Nirit
Remains of a multi period settlement situated on the top of a high hill, on the north bank of Nahal Qana (Kanah), south of Nirit.
Apollonia (Arsur, Arsuf)
A remarkable national park, with remains of a multi period settlement situated on a Kurkar sandstone cliff, and a Crusader fortress.
Remains of an ancient Tel and a small Crusader period tower near Kefar Yonah.
Remains of an ancient multi-period Tel, the largest and important archaeological site along the Nahal Alexander river.
Remains of an ancient multi-period port city, north of the ford of Nahal Alexander river.
Remains of an ancient multi-period port city, south of the ford of Nahal Hadera river.
