This church in Nazareth is one of the Holiest Christian sites. It stands in the site that was believed to be the house of Mary, where she was announced that she will give birth to Jesus.
Luke 1:31: “And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus”.
According to Catholic tradition, the site where Jesus leaped from the hill after chased away from the synagogue. From the top of the mountain are the fantastic views of the Jezreel valley, Mount Tabor, and more.
Luke 4, 29-30: “…and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way”
The spring is located in the center of downtown Nazareth. According to a tradition, this was the place where angel Gabriel announced to Virgin Mary that she will give birth to the son of God.
Luke 1:26,27: “And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary”.
St. Gabriel Church is suggested by the Greek Orthodox to be the place of Annunciation. In the crypt of the church flows Mary’s spring, the source of Mary’s well.
Luke 1:31: “And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus”.
Yafia was a large fortified city in the time of the Jewish revolt against the Romans, and was destroyed in 67AD.
Yafia has 4 churches in the old city on the hill of the churches, honoring the traditional birth place of Saint James, one of the disciples of Jesus.
The church was built by the Crusaders. According to tradition, it is the site of the synagogue where Jesus first learned, prayed and later preached as a young man.
Luke 4 15-16: “And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read”.
The parish church of the Greek Catholic community, built in 1887, is located in the middle of the old market and is adjacent to the Synagogue church.
The Protestant-Anglican Christ church was built in 1871, and is located near the Sisters of Nazareth Convent. It is shaped as a cross.
Ruins of a Franciscan church on a south hill near Mt Precipice, and was named after the traditional site where Mary, mother of Jesus, stood when her son was about to be thrown from the hill.
Luke 4 29: “And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong”.
Jesus Table Church (Mensa Christi)
This small Franciscan church , built in 1861, contains a slab of chalk rock that according to a tradition was the rock on which Jesus ate with his disciples after rising from the dead.
Mark 16: 14: “Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat…”.
The church is located, according to early traditions, over the carpenter workshop of the Holy family. Later tradition identify this place as the house of Joseph and the Holy family.
Matthew 1:16: “… Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ”.
The convent is located near the Basilica of Annunciation. Under the courtyard are archaeological findings dated to the 1st Century.
